General Guidelines

General Guidelines for everyone involved in creating the content or creating a page for the School Website.

Content:

  • Make every page count. Make sure every page has "meat" on it.
  • Structure content efficiently in order to provide visitors with your mission.
  • Provide content that has value to others in school or in the community.
  • If your content points to resources of the larger Web, make sure to point to the best resources and to excellent information.
  • Focus on publishing your student work.
  • For safety sake, be careful about including too much information about students (don't include last names, or identify students' photos. We already established a form for Students to Publish on the Internet)

Scope:

  • Start small. It's better to publish a few excellent pages than a large quantity of partially complete pages
  • Have a plan for expansion, and remember to maintain every page you publish.

Links:

  • Include links with relative content, which is full of value.
  • Be sure to annotate links, so the visitors have a clear idea about what's at the other end.
  • Include navigational links. At the very least, a link to the home page.

Graphic Design:

  • Make sure that your pages have coherence.
  • Do not use very busy backgrounds. Even if the text shows up clearly, it could be difficult for people to read if there is too much "noise".
  • Don't use a lot of images and animations. Keep in mind the time it takes to transfer images. People are impatience.
  • Use "thumbnails"(miniature versions of images) if you have a need for many images on a single page. Visitors can click on these images to see the full-sized version.
  • Use of white space. Don't accumulate a lot of text or images in a small area of the page.
  • Make sure to have equilibrium in your page.
  • Use of colors in a correct way. Don't use a lot of colors that might harm the sight of the visitors.
  • Use of Fonts. Don't use a lot of Fonts; the majority of the pages use two to three different fonts.

Updates:

  • Don't publish a page before it's ready. Wait until a page has enough content to be of value to a visitor
  • Do not say a page is under construction. The general assumption is that all sites are under construction.
