EBV Library Media Center
Collection Development
Selection objectives: Selection objectives are consistent with the mission of the EBV media center:
The Library exists to meet the informational needs of the entire school population. It supports, complements, and expands the instructional program of the school. It provides a learning environment which promotes inquiry, creativity, enrichment, self-direction, and communication of ideas through print and non-print media.
As such, the EBV media center selection objectives include:
| providing a media center collection that reflects, enriches, and supports the curriculum of Escuela Bella Vista; | |
| supporting a media center collection that reflects the individual and diverse backgrounds and interests of the EBV community; | |
| presenting a media center collection based on print and non-print resources of the highest quality and based upon solid judgment; | |
| providing a balanced collection offering both sides of an issue; | |
| supporting a collection which encourages creativity and reinforces strong information seeking skills. |
Selection responsibility: Selection of criteria reflects the educational goals of the entire school; therefore, members of the school community are included in the process. Final responsibility rests with the media center director. Faculty, administration, and parents offer suggestions for book selection and actively participate as members of a selection committee. The selection committee consists of the elementary school principal, the high school principal, an IB English teacher, a K-3 faculty member, a parent and a student. The media center director serves as chair for the committee. The selection policy committee can select to meet prior to book selection, or the committee can review a prepared list of materials.
Selection criteria: In selecting material, the EBV media center considers the educational curriculum, individual learning styles, and the existing collection. The following criteria determine appropriateness for inclusion in the EBV collection:
- Relevant: to the current social, political, and cultural climate;
- Reflective: of the student demographic population;
- Reliable: items are accurate and authentic;
- Quality: durable and attractive, based upon solid reviews;
- Presentation: clear, unbiased, comprehensible, flexible;
- Meaningful: illustrations, maps, charts, photographs.
Standard reviews of material include Booklist, Horn Book, School Library Journal, and New York Times.
Selection procedures: The media center director is directly responsible for the selection of materials. As such, the media center director will:
| Examine materials, if possible, prior to purchase; | |
| Use standard, reputable, unbiased, and professional selection aids when primary examination is not possible; | |
| Select duplicates of extensively used material; | |
| Deselect regularly based upon deselection procedure; | |
| Repair equipment and material to the greatest degree possible. |
