IB courses offered at EBV

Given below is a very brief overview of IB courses currently on offer at EBV. More information can be obtained from the IB Coordinator or from the relevant subject teacher.

Group 1: First Languages (for native or near-native speakers)
English A1 - a literary analysis course where students are involved in studying a selection of British, American and some World Literature. Both written and oral skills are assessed.
Spanish A1 - follows the same format as English, but students study a selection of Spanish, Latin American and some World Literature. Assessed in the same way as English.

Group 2: Second Languages
English A2 – a literature and cultural options course designed primarily for bilingual students. Both oral and written skills are assessed.
Spanish A2- follows the same format as English A2.
French B – a language-based course designed for non-native speakers of French. Assessed both orally and in writing.

Group 3: Individuals and Societies
History - a modern history course which includes a 20th century core and a regional option called "The Americas". The core examines: the causes, practices and effects of war; the rise and rule of single-party states; the Cold War.
Information Technology in a Global Society – a course which examines the impact, both positive and negative, of computer technology on society. Assessment is by portfolio, project and final exam.

Group 4: Experimental Sciences
Biology - an advanced course that will build both a limited body of biological facts and at the same time develop a broad, general understanding of the principals of biology through individual investigations, class discussions, and lab activities.
Chemistry - a comprehensive survey of the field of chemistry; with numerous laboratory activities to reinforce lecture knowledge and develop laboratory manipulation skills, as well as opportunities for individuals to investigate areas of specialization.

Group 5: Mathematics
Mathematics SL– this course caters for students who anticipate a need for a sound mathematical background in preparation for their future studies. It is assessed by a final exam and portfolio work.
Math Studies – this course is primarily for students who do not anticipate a need for mathematics in future studies. It is assessed by a final exam and a project.

Group 6: The Arts

Visual Art – a course in appreciation and production of a range of art using various techniques. Assessed for studies and works created by each student.
