ESL (The English as a Second Language)
Escuela Bella Vista Program Purposes and Goals
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is a language assistance program that provides the framework for students of limited English proficiency to equal access to the school curriculum. This program is available for K-8 students enrolled in Escuela Bella Vista whose first language is not English. The ESL services we provide are designed to meet the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation process and to maximize each student’s potential for success.
The purpose of the ESL Program is to meet the special needs of students whose home language is other than English in a nurturing, accepting environment which focuses on transition to mainstream academic classes and bridges the language and cultural barriers between the home and the school.
It is our goal to promote the development of academic language skills and English language skills simultaneously in order to provide language students with the instruction necessary to allow them to progress through school at a rate commensurate with their native-English-speaking peers, making the best use of our school and community resources.
The English as a Second Language department at Escuela Bella Vista follows an individualized program that allows the student to acquire language skills based on the benchmarks of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students are exposed to the four modes of the language through a rich variety of activities and strategies in order to empower them as readers and writers. Students acquire language skills over a period of time and are regularly assessed to develop an understanding of their progression.
